shine a light!

oops, sorry…was so busy trying out the cutline theme that I forgot to post about the new Scorsese film, Shine a  Light. Maybe I’m biased, but this may go down as one of the best concert films of the last 20 years. See it, not only for the music and to marvel at the age-defying (well, some of them) Rolling Stones, but also to see the  musical numbers punctuated by clips from interviews doen back when the Stones didn’t think they’d last five years. ANyway, see it, and don’t forget to add Marty as a friend on Myspace!

rental pick of the week…

Recently watched Gus Van Sant’s first film, Mala Noche. Ok, it’s definitely a first film, but it’s very interesting. The cinematography and the story are particularly intriguing. It’s based on a short story about an unrequited attraction between a liquor store clerk and a teenage Mexican immigrant. One of my favorite things about the movie is that it’s filmed in and around Portland, Oregon (Van Sant’s hometown), which served as my stomping grounds during a very fragmented and surreal (and thankfully, brief) period in my life in the early ’90’s. So yeah, maybe I’m biased, but it’s a good film to “study”, as it were.

Happy New Year, everyone!
